Custom hand made pickguard for Liam Harvey Oswald, one of Edmonton's busiest musicians. When he's not playing with his punk rock band Old Wives, he's playing in one of his side projects or cutting tracks for other local bands.
For pickguard fabrication I have limited tools so I don't do this very often as it's labor intensive and you can't really beat a manufacturers' pricing, or the precision cut of a CNC machine. This is the Gibson Joan Jett model, or was anyway.
First we trace the design onto clear plastic or paper and have the design approved (if it hasn't been created for us). I then make a template out of scrap wood from the tracing. The template has to be cut and sanded perfect (as can be), as it transfers directly onto the pickguard.
After a bit of swearing and sawdust, we attach the pickguard material to the template and cut the outside edging to match. Then using the old pickguard as a guide, we drill the screw holes, counter sink them (so the screw heads sit more level to the pickguard, route the pickup hole and route the outer edge so that it's beveled.
