Want some strat with your telecaster? A couple hours of install work and we can add a pickup where there wasn't one before. We ditched the stock pickups, cut in new spacing on the pickguard and body, installed an Oak 5-way switch and a full set of Fralin Blues Specials- slightly overwound tele/strat pickups. They have a little more bite, sustain and smoother top end. Love 'em!
This German made Hofner has a beautiful top and sounds & plays great. It has Hofner pickups which appear to have been installed out of factory, but we're going to retrofit some Fralin P-92's, which are P-90's in a humbucker casing with split coils which keep them quiet. Another brilliant design by Lindy and his team. I'm a big fan of these, they have all the characteristics of P-90's, aggressive when digging in, yet chimey and articulate when pulling back.
Pulling out the old wiring was a dog's breakfast. Electrical tape everywhere and poor solder joints. The pots were dirty anyways so we installed new CTS pots with a quality switchcraft toggle switch.
It's easy to wire up the parts, it's tucking in all those wires which is the tricky part. How do we do it? Get it all in, then clean it up through the f-holes, zip ties work great. Tape leaves a mess all over the wiring and is a pain to remove should anyone want to change things out. As you can see, there is not even a hint of those wires when looking through the f-holes, which is exactly what you want to see.
Gibson ES-335DD Pickup Installation w/ Seymour Duncan Production Floor Customs, Mallory Mustard Caps & Treble Bleed Mod
Nothing wrong with Gibson pickups, but you will definitely notice an improvement with some quality aftermarket upgrades. In this case we ordered up some Seymour Duncan Production Floor Custom Pickups, a 59/Hybrid and Pearly Gates combo in white with gold pole pieces (we ordered an additional set for stock if you like the look!). The tricky aspect of pickup installations on semi-hollows, is the limited work space. Everything needs to be fished out of the pickup cavities and then re-installed the same way it all came out. Since everything had to come out we also upgraded to a Mallory Mustard tone Cap and added Treble Bleed mod (retains your high frequencies when rolling your volume knob back) with Orange Drop caps. The result? Sounds just killer!
This must be the summer of project guitars, number 6 just in the last 6 weeks! Warmoth Jazzcaster style with Babizc bridge, Sperzel locking tuners, Dimarzio pickups and custom wiring including Ibanez-style switching with CTS No-Load Pots, all done here in-house. A gorgeous guitar, it was a real treat to bring to life.
"The most intense sustained tone machine I've ever had, chambered ash warmoth body, exotic neck, Tele hardware, nashville style wiring ( 3 pickup ) , and hot pickups. Stunned at the outcome of this beast thanks Jon @ J Haven guitarworks on 106 street just south of white ave". Robby S
Miss that rhythm tone at the neck position? Something we do around here a lot is custom routing with pickup and switch installations. If you're doing this yourself, don't forget to shield the cavity before installing the new pickups!
